Common Traffic Violations in Colorado

Millions of people in Denver drive to and from work or rely on driving to earn a living, transport children to school, and countless other tasks. A traffic violation such as speeding, reckless driving, or other offense can put your legal right to drive at risk, not to mention the hefty fines you may be forced to pay.

Some of the more common traffic violations that may result in criminal charges include, but are not limited to:

  • Reckless driving
  • Driving under the influence (DUI)
  • Driving under the influence of drugs (DUID)
  • Driving carelessly
  • Driving without a valid driver’s license
  • Driving without insurance
  • Speeding more than 24 miles above the posted speed limit
  • Vehicular assault
  • Leaving the scene of an accident

If you or a loved one is facing traffic violation charges, our Denver traffic violations attorney at Big Mountain Law is here to help. Colorado License Points & License Suspension

It is important to note that moving violations do come with lasting consequences, as every violation comes with demerit points that are added to your license. Different moving violations come with a different amount of points that will accumulate on your license, these include, but are not limited to: DUI = 12 points, speeding 40 or more over the legal limit = 12 points, speeding 20 to 39 over the speed limit = 6 points, speeding 11 to 19 over the speed limit = 4 points, & speeding up to 10 miles over the speed limit = 1 point.

After enough points are accumulated on your license you will be facing a licenses suspension from 6 months to a year, points required for a licenses suspension include:

  • Adults - 12 points within a 12 month time span or 18 points within a 24 month time span.
  • Adults Under the Age of 21 - 9 points within a 12 month time span, 12 points within 24 month time span, or 14 points total before the driver turns 21.
  • Minors - 6 points within a 12 month time span or 7 points total before the driver turns 18.
